Feminism.  Is there just one or are they many?

We will begin by drawing our attention to the title of this essay which employs the plural to refer to feminism. Thus, at the beginning itself we seek to establish that there is no one history of feminism. Indeed, the unfolding of the history of feminism alerts us to the idea that women all over the world have very different experiences and realities to contend with. No one narration can presume to encapsulate the experience of all women all over the world. In other words a universal history of feminism is not possible nor is it desirable.

The World Bank and IMF were those twin agencies who for the first time talked about the basic tenets of governance like transparency, accountability, efficiency and fairness in order to check the excessive concentration of state power. The concept of good governance was aired by these agencies in order to justify there policies in which they tried to show that they are really bothered about addressing the social and economic problem faced by different countries and will stress on pursuing those policies which will help in reducing poverty and will lead to the real development of the society. But in reality the World Bank advocated the concept of good governance in which they wanted state to play an active role only for creating a conducive environment for the market to flourish and wanted the state only to function in a manner that would not intrude upon the efficient functioning of the market forces .This article tries to highlight that even after streamlining the Indian administration on the principles of good governance, governance still remains  poor as is evident from various scams like fodder scam, commonwealth scam, 2G spectrum scam etc. In this we would also like to show that privatization is not a solution to problems of governance as governance itself is an issue with in the corporate world. This article proposes a shift from good governance to clean governance and also highlight the measures to ensure clean governance in India.

GOOD GOVERNANCE

We have been taught by long experience that the part played by reason in politics is smaller than we have been content to suppose……Our task, assuredly, is to give reason the largest possible place in the conduct of affairs; either we must plan our civilization or we must perish

The Sociology of Merit - II

Merit and Culture

June 6, 2011 08:33 AM

The concept of merit is in very common use these days. It is central to the way we think of excellence in education and also to much of the debate on the issue of reservations. Most people, however, treat the concept of merit in too simple a manner: a students who tops a given exam is said to have merit and the others do not. Sociologists of education, however, think quite differently about it. Things are not as simple as they seem.

MEANING AND NATURE OF POLICY

It is first essential to define the concept ‘Policy’.  This denotes, among other things, guidance for action and may take the form of (a) a declaration of goals and objectives; (b) a declaration of courses of action; and (c) a declaration on societal values.  A policy may be general or specific, broad or narrow, simple or complex, public or private, written or unwritten, explicit or implicit, discretionary or detailed and qualitative or quantitative.

The study of management as a discipline is relatively new, especially when compared with other scientific disciplines. Yet, to truly understand current management thought, it is necessary to examine the historical links. It is best to consider not only management pioneers' management theories, but also the contextual and environmental factors that helped to clarify the developmental process behind the theories. Therefore, management pioneers may be easily placed along a historical timeline.
